Nostalgia and Poetry…#8

Ok, so – call me cheesy, if you will – but one of my favorite books (and movies) is Little Women…. I relate so much to Jo’s character it’s not even funny.  One of my favorite quotes from the book is the inspiration for this poem, written in 2010, when I was considering leaving teaching to do that elusive “something else” for a while.

past lives

“I should have been a great many things…” Jo, Little Women

Many things, I, too, should’ve been, and
many things I already, briefly, was…  Am.
Skinny girl with curly hair shall I never be;
nor shall I be mean or vain, and never called a fool.
Lately, though, I ponder most what my future
tense will be; and tense this verb should I also be.
Favorite songs are helpless now, for readily
they tell lies – of happier times and fonder memories,
send me longingly beyond – fixed upon their melody.
So many things I’d like to be, yet I am cursed as what?
A writer with no publisher? A teacher without a class?
Turn the radio up a bit, to drown out these silly thoughts.
I want to wash away my sorrows and the many things I’m not.

Hope you are having a fabulous day!  See you soon.
Until next time…

  1. I am so touched! And I can identify with your wonderful words from start to finish.
I guess, sometimes it’s a fine line between nostalgia and sadness…but I have yet to read Little Women ;)
